Computer Services, Inc. (CSI) was incorporated in March 1965 for the purpose of providing bank data processing services in western Kentucky and southern Illinois. Since then the region served has grown to include much of the nation, and we now offer solutions in both an in-house and service bureau environment.
The foundation of CSI was the agreement of three Paducah banks to cooperate in the use of a common data processing servicer. With the commitment of these progressive banks as the foundation, John A. Williams, Chairman of the Board, created the philosophy behind CSI. This vision of providing the best data processing continues and is shared by Steven A. Powless, President and Chief Executive Officer. CSI was started with a $150,000 sale of 3,000 shares of stock to over 300 stockholders. This broad base of ownership established an on-going commitment to be a strong, independent servicer.
Operations began with six employees and three customers in Paducah; Citizens Bank, Peoples Bank, and Paducah Bank.
From its inception, CSI understood that strategically investing in facilities and technology was a key to future success. In 1965 CSI built a 5,000 square foot, $100,000 facility to house the high-speed Burroughs B300, a magnetic tape computer system valued at $400,000. A second computer was added in 1969 to handle increased demand for services. For over four decades, we have continued to invest millions of dollars in facilities and technology to remain a leader in the bank data processing industry.
In October of 1965 CSI began processing checks and deposit accounts for customers. Today CSI has expanded its in-house developed software to include nearly 30 core banking products and a multitude of ancillary software products that are fully integrated with our core processing.
From the beginning, CSI has conducted seminars for customer banks. These seminars helped to prepare banks for the eventual conversion to automation and also served as a source for ideas in bank automation. By 1987, these seminars had expanded into an annual customer conference that today is recognized industry-wide as "the premier event of the community bank year." The conference gives bankers the opportunity to preview newly released products and to learn about banking-related issues, government regulations and other information critical to their daily operations and future success.
In 1966 we began adding banks outside Paducah, beginning a succession of new bank additions that continues today. In the late '60s, items were transported daily via courier from customer banks to CSI and back. This limited our market to an area of 75 miles surrounding the Paducah Data Center. We began geographic expansion by opening our first remote Data Center in Madisonville, Kentucky, in 1971. Since then we have strategically located Service Centers throughout the CSI geography to meet the needs of customer for item capture, report printing and imaging.
By 1969 we were one of the largest facilities of our type in the United States and ranked among the top 10 in the country.
CSI was the first independent bank data processing company in Kentucky and one of the first in the United States. Since its inception, CSI has been recognized for delivering innovative technologies including off-site Proof of Deposit operations in 1969, Commercial Loan processing in 1971, and micro to mainframe interfacing in 1981.
In 1976 we started a new era in bank data processing when we began supporting in-bank terminals on-line. In July of 1984 we developed and introduced AlphaLink, Kentucky's first on-line computer banking network that connected ATMs to bank records. That same year we invested $1 million to upgrade the ATM processing system with an electronic funds transfer switch to link bank-owned ATMs with regional and national networks.
The acquisition of Indiana Information Controls, Inc. in 1992 was unique in the history of CSI, increasing the number of customers by 50% in one year and solidifying our position as a "Premier Servicer" in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois.
In 1997 we moved into our new corporate headquarters - a 75,000 square foot building that incorporates the latest in voice, data and video communication technologies and provides the infrastructure required to meet present and future needs.
In April of 1998, we finalized the purchase of Computer Bank, Inc. (CBI), a bank processing firm headquartered in Mt. Pleasant, Texas and expanded the CSI geography into Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. This acquisition added three states to the CSI geography and nearly 50 banks to our customer base.
In August 1999, Steven A. Powless was named President & Chief Executive Officer, moving up from President & Chief Operating Officer, a position he has held since 1993. John A. Williams continues as Chairman of the Board and leads efforts to expand CSI's Internet service to customers, specifically browser-based technologies that will help them to use the Internet more effectively.
In August 2000, CSI finalized the acquisition of First Commerce Technologies, a bank processing company headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska. The acquisition added 200 employees to the CSI staff; 250 customers to our client base; and the states of Nebraska, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Iowa to the CSI service area.
Also in 2000, CSI established the eBusiness Division, developing a product line that today includes a corporate Intranet, secure email, secure online document storage, and secure Internet access, as well as a secure web hosting service.
In May 2003, CSI acquired ATTUS Technologies, Inc., a privately-held company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, that is a leading provider of technology-based compliance solutions for financial institutions. CSI's infrastructure and expertise in the Internet arena contributes to the use of dot-net technologies in ATTUS product offerings.
In April 2005, CSI purchase a 49% ownership in Heartland Communications with an option to purchase the remaining 51% within five years. Heartland provides Internet and telephone services and has considerable expertise in wireless and Internet video technology.
In November 2005, CSI acquired McCoy Myers & Associates of Amarillo, Texas, a leading provider of in-house and service bureau processing systems for community banks. This acquisition is particularly significant because it adds an in-house banking product to CSI's offerings. It also adds approximately 150 bank customers, $14 million in revenues and is CSI's largest acquisition in our 40-year history.
Each decade has created more demand for information and more opportunities for information providers that are can deliver a quick response to market conditions. CSI works hard to service its partners today and continues to invest time, talent, and money preparing for tomorrow.
